Four or perhaps five stars may have been an appropriate rating in the late 70's or 80's. Not much has changed in the last 20-25 years. Our unit smelled musty particularly in the downstairs (below grade) master bedroom. My wife has a slight case of asthma so we opted to stay in the upstairs bed room utilizing the tiny twin beds. The toilets routinely needed plunging. Several of the lights were burned out and not replaced. The couch had an odor all its own. The appliances were of made up of several vintages. The refrigerator may have been the original. When we expressed our concerns to the desk the reply was, "Well we can move you, but I can't tell you that the (new) unit will be any better." I could go on, but I think you get the drift. On a positive note, the resort was very quiet and peaceful.
The golf course was a top course 15 or 20 years ago. It is in need of a serious renovation. The on-site restaurant's food and service was nothing special at all. Additionally, the resort is spread over several miles. Accordingly you must drive a few miles to take advantage of most of the amenities.
If you plan to stay in this area I would recommend a stay in or near Highlands, NC. It's a very nice little town with a great main street housing specialty shops and restaurants. Golf in the area is pricey. Expect in season rounds in the $80-$100 range. Unless you are looking for a very slow pace more than 3-4 days in this area is plenty. There are side trips to be taken, but the mountain roads make for some tedious driving.
All in all forget Fairway Forest and head to Highlands, NC for a long weekend.

We have been to many timeshares and Fairway Forest has to rank on the bottom. We stayed in a one bedroom unit that has the kitchen (an ancient throwback), bath, and bedroom in the basement. The musty smell was overwhelming and large spiders were hanging in every room. The place was very quiet (who would want to stay there!) and we left after 4 nights. -Review courtesy of M (stayed during Sep, 2007) |

The resort was in a beautiful location. But the units needed to be updated. The carpet felt sticky so we had to were slippers and/or socks all of the time. The lower level bedroom smelled moldy and felt damp. We sleep upstairs instead. The tv speakers in the living room were terrible. You could hardly hear the tv unless you had it turned up loud. TV should be replaced. The tv in the bedroom was much too small. The clothes dryer is installed so high that you need a stool to stand on in order to use it. The paper towel holder in the kitchen was broke. We were there from May 1-6 and 4 out of the six days our keys did not work. We had to call maintenance 5 times and they could not fix the problem. So every time we left for the day and when we returned, we had to go to the office so someone could let us in to our unit...very frustrating. It would be nice if they had a toaster oven.
The towns of Highlands and Cashiers were amazing. They are about 15 minutes from Sapphire. Lots of great shops and beautiful scenery. We did not like the food at Mica's or the Carolina Smokehouse. The Oak Street Cafe in Highlands was yummy... the Libray was very good also, but with a very limited menu.
It rained every morning we were there, but it was one of the best vacations we have had mainly because of the beautiful surroundings. We plan on returning in October for the fall colors...it should be a visual overload...will try and stay somewhere else instead of the Fairways. -Review courtesy of CC (stayed during May, 2009) |
