New Bern was quiet yet exciting. We decided on New Bern to have family time together and to have to get out and see the sites and enjoy a new town. We were entrigued by the fact that New Bern is the birthplace of Pepsi Cola (my favorite soft drink by the way) and we were looking forward to exploring the historic downtown area. The recreation center on the property served as a source of entertainment, especially the wonderful pool area, for my 13, 10, and 7 year olds. They had a blast at the pool almost everyday. The rain and lightning made us find fun indoors on some days though, but we made the most of it playing pool, tennis, golf and basket ball. I will say the playground area could use a good update and the mini golf area should be updated also. The rooms were cozy yet the kitchen area was rather small and difficult to work in because with three children it is best to "cook in' most of the week. The balcony that was led to by the master bed was nice and had a great view of the golf course. The lakes on the property were beautiful and the geese crossing the road was amazing to see. We had access to the marina and mini-beach that we took the opportunity to fish from and some of us spent time splashing in the small waves. To get to the gas station was 16 miles round trip, something we were not particularly used to, so when we were out for the day, we tried to remember to get everything on our list! The folks we met seemed very friendly and helpful and also seemed to enjoy the town and were glad to give a little advise to some 'out of towners'. All in all I can say we ejoyed the ride to New Bern, learned some interesting facts, visited some great historic places and will remember this family trip for years to come. Some notable happenings were actually visiting the birthplace of Pepsi, although that day they had a cealing cave in in the storage room, the staff said come on in and have a "Pepsi", the Cow Cafe, and Anitque shop, beautiful shops along Middle Street, the Aquarium, Atlantic Beach (nice fishing spot), and Sonic (which are not in Maryland). The greatest thing is we had an awesome time together as a family which sums up a great vacation in New Bern. -Review courtesy of wilbert pierce (stayed during Jul, 2007) |
