We just fell in love with Il Poggio, and bought a week there on the second day to make sure we could come back again and again! We have been there 3 times since, and can't wait to go again in September. Americans beware - there are no dishwashers in the condos, and no washing machines in the resort- although a local lady does laundry and returns quickly at low cost - the charm of Il Poggio is all about it's beautiful locations, away from the busy tourist traps of Siena and San Gimignano. These 2 beautiful cities are not too far for a day trip, and Florence can also be visited in day by train from Chiusi - but there are so many other cities nearby, Orvieto, Montepulciano, Pienza and Montalchino, and so many other hill towns, including Celle within walking distance, and San Casciano 5 minutes away, where there is a fantastic spa, part of the Leading Hotels of the World, where you can just use the sulphur pools, or get seriously pampered for the day. The apartments are simple Tuscan style, with understated Tuscan flair and style and the restaurant building and patio are stunning. There are 2 pools, both unheated so can be cold before end of June and from mid-September. You can do archery there, and if you are keen riders, there are very good horses and a riding school. The most unusual thing about Il Poggio is that the owners live on site. It was Enrica's family farm, and when she marrid Roberto, they decided to concentrate farming on his family's estate, and transform Il Poggio in a resort. The family dine in the same dining-room as guests. They have a special formula where you can have half board for the full week, or just for 4 days - as we usually do, and they have a shop on site selling all their own organic produce, cheese, salami, wine, etc. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and the service impeccable. Again, it is the view from the terrasse which is to die for- and the flowers in June are just breathtaking. There is a visitors' lounge on site with a large billiards table and a bar, so guests can meet and chat. No entertaining, thank Goodness - just friendly hospitality and marvellous Tuscan countryside, sunrise and sunset. We feel very privileged to own there. -Review courtesy of Odile Churchward (stayed during Jun, 2002) |

We stayed at il Poggio for a week of hiking through Cross Country International. The accommodations were very good, though we really missed the ability to drink the tap water and a way to do laundry other than by hand. The management offered a very pricey dry cleaner but the local woman who was mentioned in a previous review was nowhere in sight. For a hiking vacation, the location was great and we walked from the resort two days and traveled to other starting points on three other days. One day, we just hung around the resort and walked into Celle sul Rigo for snacks--a lovely day. Do expect some rather steep hills and don't come here if you can't do lots of steps. The apartments are mostly down or up a flight. -Review courtesy of Beth Spande (stayed during Jun, 2008) |
