This is so much better than a hotel, which are renting for over $300 per night + tax. You can enjoy a hot breakfast every morning, cooked in a full kitchen, complete with a very nice high-end stove, large refrigerator and dishwasher. Save money by packing a picnic lunch for your drive to Waimea Canyon, one of the must-see areas of Kauai. Mark Twain called Waimea Canyon 'The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.' There are picnic tables in the park, surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Spend a day at the resort on your large lanai and barbecuing some steaks on the grills near the pool. The pool is naturally filtered and chlorine free, so no more tears while swimming. The pool is filled by a waterfall that constantly runs down lava rock and beautiful plants. The lush landscape of Bali Hai is a wonderful, blissful environment to do some serious relaxing.
Snorkeling is great at Tunnels beach, near the famous small town of Hanalei, just a few miles north of Princeville. Use the washer and dryer in the unit to clean your swimming gear for a second and third trip.
There are farmers' markets at Kapa'a and in Hanalei regularly. You can buy fresh fruit and make tropical smoothies when you get back after a long day. Add a little rum and you have a drink that really relaxes! You can go to the Smith's Tropical Paradise Luau and enjoy a delicious feast, followed by a beautiful ceremonial luau that is educational as well as fun. You can even get up on the stage before dinner and lear the hukilau dance. The song is one you will remember for years after your trip. We love Kauai and cannot go this year. We are very disappointed that we are unable to use our week, so we reserved this week especially for someone else to enjoy.
The only expense you will have besides the rental fee is a Transient Occupancy Tax of under $40.00. The resort will take your credit card imprint at the time of check-in, and when you check out, they will hand you a receipt for the modest charge. We stayed in Hawaii last year and paid $42.00 for a two bedroom unit. All users of Kauai resorts must pay this fee. (If you were to book a hotel, you'd also have to pay this tax, along with sales tax which we don't charge.)
What else can you do on Kauai? You can take a boat ride out to see the whales, which will start arriving before the holidays. You can also take a kayak that you can rent inexpensively and paddle along the coastline. You can kayak to a spot along the Wailua River where you will leave your kayak and hike to a beautiful waterfall the locals call Secret Falls. You can watch the surfers in Kapa'a or rent a surfboard and try it out for yourselves. There is a wonderful place in Kapa'a called Coconut Grove Marketplace, complete with a movie theater and many restaurants and shops. There is a Costco on the island, too, that sells gas less expensively than the other stations on the island, and a Macy's and other major stores.
There are some quaint towns on Kauai that we have enjoyed visiting. There are nice little shops in several of the towns. The Beach Hut is the best place to get fish and chips, made with the mild fish ono, which means good in Hawaiian. It is a small place near Lihue, and the prices are very reasonable, about $7.95 for a full plate.
A book we recommend is The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook, which was written by the same people that wrote Maui Revealed. It is in the same series as the Revealed books but was probably the first they wrote. You can buy it on eBay or Amazon. The Costco store carries it as well.
