Many new timeshare scams seem to be invented or recreated each year, it is really hard to go even a week most of time without hearing about a new variation or completely different scam invented to separate timeshare owners from their money. Recently I read a story out of Oregon on one of the local TV stations websites exposing a new instance of one of the oldest scams on record, the Ponzi scheme. KTVZ, an Oregon television station, reports that this latest timeshare scam was a nation wide operation and brought in an estimated 428 million dollars in revenue before the system came tumbling down. In Oregon it is estimated that nearly 5 million dollars was taken from residents before the scam was discovered. The type of scam that was used in this case is known as a Ponzi scheme, which originated around 1920 and is named after its inventor Charles Ponzi. This type of scheme has recently been in the news because it was used by Bernard Madoff in the largest investment fraud on Wall Street to date. If you would like more information about the Oregon timeshare scam or have been affected by it you can read the entire article here, “Time-share scam salesman: ‘We were victims, too’”.

How Does A Ponzi Scheme Work?
While we do not claim to be any expert on this matter or anything in the legal field we have developed an understanding of this type of scheme and would like to share the information. A Ponzi scheme starts off with a sales pitch most of the time an investment opportunity, in the above case the clients were advised to invest in Mexico timeshares which would yield high returns while being rented out through a number of different affiliates and partnerships. In reality the “Investment” opportunity normally generates little or no income revenue. In order to keep any suspicions at rest the creators of this scheme use money from new investors to pay older investors making them believe that their investment is really paying off and was a good transaction for their future. Eventually the money will run out and the scam collapses under its own weight, at this time everyone involved realizes they have been scammed and will never see their money again. Perhaps the most interesting part of the story reported by KTVZ is the salesmen who were selling the investment opportunities did not have any clue that they were even involved in the scam, they were hired to sell the investments and were paid via commissions on their sale, which were held by the creators of this scheme making the salesmen victims, in their minds, as well as the investors. Ponzi schemes can be carefully planned out and generate an extraordinary amount of income for the original creator, in fact Bernie Madoff’s variation of this scheme generated 65 billion in revenue before it collapsed.

Ponzi schemes are very hard to spot, the best advice we can give is to ask a lot of questions and research any investment opportunities you are contacted about to the fullest extent. Always remember if it sounds to good to be true chances it probably is. If you were contacted in reference to this scam or any other scam we would love to hear your story and if you have taken any steps to rectify the situation.

Like many other people around the world we frequently check different financial sector websites to try to obtain a prospective of the world economy and when we can expect it to fully recover. Recently while viewing a financial website I came across an article that caught my attention, obviously the readers of our blog will know it probably has something to do with travel or timeshares or both. This article dealt with the issue of unused vacation/sick days and the government now allowing employees to deposit the cash out values of these days directly into their 401K or other qualifying retirement plan. The initiative was undertaken by the Obama administration in an effort to encourage Americans to save more money for the future. If you would like to read this article please feel free to do so, “Unused vacation? It may pay”.

In theory this really seems like a good idea as many people have a number of unused vacation/sick days every year and instead of them going to waste they can now use them for the future. However, I do not believe that the negative effects in the business place have been thoroughly discussed, or if they were have not been covered in this article. It has been shown through a number of different studies over the years that a relaxed employee will be more productive thus getting more accomplished over the course of their work period. Perhaps the number one method used by employees to relax is taking a vacation, when employees return from vacation many report have a new found vigor for their position and daily duties in their company. I also believe having relaxed co-workers/employees leads to a better work environment for everyone not just the traveler giving the company greater productivity. Travelers always seem to be in a better mood after they get back from vacation, this causes less disputes and arguments throughout the work place creating a better environment for everyone in the company. I always say a good attitude will rub off on others, therefore when an employee returns from vacation hopefully their mood will inspire everyone else to work just as hard with the same positive attitude. Think of the time spent everyday in your company trying to settle arguments and disagreements, if people were more relaxed and in better spirits many of these arguments could be avoided. Many readers may also remember a recent post in this blog describing the findings of study showing that vacations may actually make your children smarter. If you would like to read this previous post please feel free to do so “Timeshare Vacations Can Make You Smarter!”. While encouraging Americans to save their money for the future may be good for the long term the short term productivity loss and general lack of relaxation should be looked at in depth as well.

In the end this initiative at least gives people the option to do something with unused vacation days as oppose to letting them go to waste. I would never encourage people to go against their wishes when it comes to personal finances but I do feel the consequences should be weighed on both sides of every issue, especially when it comes to your well being. If you are ready to take a vacation after reading this article please feel free to begin searching our timeshare rentals.

A Florida legislative bill has recently become a law affecting everyone who either owns a timeshare in Florida or plans to exchange for a Florida Timeshare. The bill named HB 61 was introduced in the spring of 2009 but recently was made into a law and addresses two main issues that timeshare owners may face, the first is paying taxes on timeshare exchanges and the second issues involves the offering of debt cancellation products by timeshare resorts. Even though there are currently no states that collect taxes for timeshare exchanges it is refreshing to see a state government taking the initiative and preparing in advance for an issue that could become a problem in the future.

Why was this bill written?
The bill has been lobbied for by one of the most well known timeshare organizations in the United Stated, the American Resort Development Association (ARDA), this organization was formed to protect consumers in the timeshare industry and fight for their rights. In the current economic condition many state and local governments are looking for alternate means to supplement low revenue, charging timeshare owners a tax for timeshares that were exchanged or the party exchanging into the timeshare was one of the foreseeable methods. This would have effectively raised the rates of timeshares across the state of Florida, which contains some of the most popular timeshare destinations such as Orlando timeshares. Thanks to this bill there will be no added taxes for exchanging timeshares. The second issue addressed in this law was giving resorts the ability to offer debt cancellation products, basically these would act as a safety net for purchasers of timeshares, allowing them to return the timeshare to the resort if they lose their job without negatively impacting their credit. Many people will be familiar with these types of programs as they have been offered by automobile manufacturers in the past to encourage people to purchase a car.

I feel the passing of this bill shows that the citizens of Florida are taking the initiative to ensure a great future for the timeshare industry and Florida tourism as a whole. If you are interested in renting or purchasing a timeshare in this state please visit our Florida timeshares section.

Being a skeptical person myself I know that many of you were thinking “Yea Right, how can a timeshare vacation make me smarter?” when your read the subject of this post, however I recently found an article published on CheapFlights.com confirming this fact and thought it was very interesting. Recently there was a study conducted by the Department of Education, the objective of this study was to find out if there is a correlation between summer family timeshare vacations and academic achievements of children entering the first grade. The study found that children who did travel while on summer vacation did better in math, reading, and general studies than those children who did not travel. Dr. Bill Norma of Clemson University had this to say about the findings, “The data is clear - and gives hard-working parents another reason not to put off a summer vacation trip. Providing kids with the experience of travel broadens their horizons and opens up their minds to learning”. The study does not go into theories regarding why the summer vacation helps children to excel in school but here are a few of my opinions as to why vacations may help children learn.

I think the main reason that children who travel during the summer excel in school is the relaxation that a summer vacation provides. During a vacation the optimal goal is to separate yourself from your everyday life, when this happens your brain will feel rested thus creating a higher ability to function in school and learn. The second reason that a vacation can help a child learn in my opinion is vacations will help stimulate the child’s mind and ready them to absorb more knowledge. While on vacation there are many new sights, sounds, and activities to interact with, this encourages children as well as adults to explore and investigate new concepts and activities. American children have become used to a sedentary lifestyle; many will spend most of their summer vacation sitting around watching TV and playing video games, getting away from this daily routine for a week or so will help to ready a child for the upcoming school year. A vacation can also show children that learning is fun and does not always have to involve conventional school room methods. As stated above there are many new places to see and visit in a vacation, before leaving for your trip make sure to research the surrounding area and find points of interest that involve some learning aspect, for example it can be a place where a historical event occurred or visiting a museum in the area. Basically anything that involves some sort of knowledge will show children that learning does not have to be confined to the classroom.

I have always strongly beloved that relaxation and traveling help to relieve stress and can increase the productivity of workers around the world, since this study was released my belief in traveling and the benefits it provides are even stronger. If you would like to contribute to your children’s’ knowledge of the world please visit the following page to search for timeshare rentals.

Most visitors of our site are in some way interested in the concept of timeshares some are trying to sell a timeshare while other might be looking to find a timeshare rental. If you are a regular visitor of our site chances are you are very knowledgeable of the concept and have been involved with timeshares in some fashion for a number of years. However knowledge about any subject does not come over night, I thought it would be fun to take a look back and remember what your first timeshare experience was like and how you found out about the concept.

Many people learn about the concept of timeshares while on vacation, either they run into a person promoting a particular resort or find a flier asking you to visit the resort and you will receive free show tickets or free dinner, attending a sales meeting at a resort in exchange for free lodging or other gifts is known as a timeshare promotion. Hopefully you were not fooled into purchasing a timeshare directly from the resort since a unit can be purchased for a fraction of the resort selling price. There are another group of people who heard about timesharing through word of mouth. Maybe a neighbor or co-worker purchased a unit while on vacation then explained the concept to you. When you hear about something from a family member or friend who is trustworthy, the topic is more likely to peak your interest to do further research on the topic to gain a better understanding. Other people may have simply stumbled upon the concept while searching for lodging accommodations on the Internet. I fall into this category, while searching for a vacation rental home I came across this concept even though vacation rentals and timeshares are different in many ways somehow I found a website that totally explained the concept and I was hooked. I started researching different timeshare resorts and how the concept worked as a whole, of course this was many years ago now I could probably write books on this subject along with an extraordinary amount of common mistakes that first time owners will make, many of which have been covered in this blog at different times. Hopefully pointing out scams and what to look for has helped some of our readers to avoid being taken advantage of.

No matter how long you have been interested in timesharing we would love to hear from you, let us know how you got involved. If you are a newbie to the industry we invite you to read through this blog and our site which contains a wealth of information collected over years and provides you with a good base understanding and brings attention to some of the pitfalls that can be avoided. We would also like to hear from some veterans, what are some of the resources you have used in the past to increase your understanding of this industry and what advice would you give to travelers just beginning to tackle this subject.

In the past we have discussed the right and wrong ways to pay for a timeshare rental, recently I read a story of a woman getting ripped off trying to rent out a timeshare that a scammer had listed and felt it was necessary to cover the topic again. I do not have all of the details of the story but I will try to give a short summary about this woman’s situation. She had contacted someone and everything seemed to be legit, however when she was trying to make payment arrangements the scammer insisted on having her pay using a bank transfer instead of another method. I am not sure if the woman sent her personal information to the party or just transferred money from her account to the specified, the details are as important as what happened next. The “owner” and the victim agreed upon a price of $800 which was drawn from the renter’s account, which obviously she did not think twice about, however weeks later the scammer made another withdraw from her account in the amount of $1,600, since the scammer had all of her banking information the bank allowed the transfer to go through without incident. Once the woman realized the extra money had been stolen from her account it was too late, the account the money was transferred too had already been closed and the money was gone. There are a few payments methods this woman could have used that would have protected her from this scam.

The first and easiest payment method is to use paypal to transfer the funds, using this method the person can either use a credit card or transfer funds directly from their bank account, so if the woman needed to pay using her bank account she still could have done this. Paypal has built in protection for the users of their site, if you transfer money to someone and they do not provide the service or product you have paid for Paypal will reimburse your funds until the other party can prove they provided the item paid for. Some owners do not like to use Paypal because they charge a transfer fee for every transaction that is accepted, if you are renter you can always volunteer to pay for the fees, normally around four percent of the transfer amount, which is well worth the piece of mind you will receive. The second method we recommend is to pay with a credit card. Most major credit card companies have a fraud protection plan available that allows you to dispute any charge on your card and makes the party who charged the credit prove the product paid for was delivered. I still recommend using a great amount of caution when giving out a credit card number, directly giving someone your credit card number can create a good amount of trouble if they plan on using it fraudulently. Even though you can most times be reimbursed for any fraudulent activity it will cause undue headaches since you will have to contact the credit card company and probably need to get a new credit card number. The final method we recommend is to use a secure escrow service, which holds the renter’s payment in escrow until the unit has been occupied. Using an escrow service will normally cost around $100, however this is much less expensive then having the full amount of a rental stolen from you.

If you have been taken advantage of you should contact your local authorities, your banking institution, timeshare resort, and timeshare company you found the property with. Also make sure to save all communications you had with the scammer and feel free to post the information on the Internet for everyone to see, after all you could help someone else from being scammed and possible find a way to get your money back if others have been scammed by the same party before.

Most timeshare owners are aware that you can exchange a timeshare week by joining one of the two major exchange companies, Resort Condominiums International (RCI) or Interval International (II). The company that an owner is allowed to join will depend on their home resort, some are only affiliated with RCI others with II , while others are not affiliated with either exchange company and some are affiliated with both. These companies allow their members to deposit/bank their week into a community pool of timeshare weeks for everyone to use, once the owner has deposited their week they are then able to select a week in the pool to use for their vacation. The most common complaint that I hear from members enrolled in exchange services is they are unable to find a unit to fit their needs once they have already deposited their week, this is because the more popular weeks/locations that are in high demand will be the options that are selected first. People searching for a specific week in a low demand location normally do not have a problem finding the week that will accommodate them. While most owners are familiar with these two companies and how the exchange process works they may not be aware that two owners can simply swap their weeks and avoid having to use either of these two companies.

Finding another owner to participate in a timeshare exchange can relieve a lot of the stress brought about by trying to find an exchange through RCI or II. The one factor that is difficult throughout this process is finding an owner willing to exchange for the exact unit that another owner has. Since most people only own one week per year their selection available for other owners to use is limited to their one week. Vacation Timeshare Rentals makes the process of find a timeshare exchange directly from the owner much easier since we have a section of the site solely dedicated to timeshare exchanges. Once two owners have agreed to exchange their weeks both owners will need to contact their resorts and let the reservations department know that they will not be using their unit, instead a guest will be using their timeshare. The resort will normally give the owner a confirmation number to give to the other party so they can verify their reservation with the resort, once both parties have verified their stay with the resort the exchange is complete. Just because an owner has not indicated that they are willing to exchange their property does not mean they would not consider an exchange, for this reason we also recommend an owner looking to exchange their timeshare also search our timeshare rentals section. Once you have found a timeshare that fits your needs an inquiry can be sent to the owner of timeshare, however when you send this inquiry it is important to indicate to the other owner that you are interested in an exchange as oppose to renting their timeshare. The inquiry should contain all pertinent information regarding the unit you are trying to exchange, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, usage dates, location, and resort name should all be included.

Timeshare owners obviously are interested in travel and everything that goes along with it, however I was under the impression that many owners only purchased a single week, until recently when I read a statement published by Owners Prospective magazine which claimed that more than 50 percent of owners are interested in owning other weeks. Since this publication mainly focuses on owners in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe, I began to wonder if this trend was true for owners in the USA. I also began to think of some of the reasons why an owner would be interested in purchasing a second or even third timeshare unit, below are some of the reasons that I came up with.

The first reason that people may be buying multiple weeks now is the current state of the economy. The secondary market is definitely in favor of the buyer right now, with literally thousands of units for sale around the country and world for that matter the competition is very high and in the end price is main driver for resales. The timeshare resales market is very similar to the automobile resale market, once the car is driven off the lot the value of the car is dramatically decreased, timeshares are the same way once you buy a timeshare from the resort the value will not be as high due to the amount of competition in the secondary market. Another reason that some owners might want to purchase an extra timeshare might be if they owned a points based timeshare which allows you to use a timeshare anywhere within the clubs network for a given amount of points. The point values of two timeshares can be combined together so if the current owner does not have enough points to use one of the higher end resorts in the given network they may consider purchasing another timeshare and combining the points together to extend their travel options. Furthermore, some people wish to use all of their vacation at one time, instead of taking two one week long vacations they would rather have one vacation that spans two weeks. For this reason some might want to buy two weeks that are back to back at a given resort so they do not have to worry about finding accommodations each time they travel. The final reason coming to mind was maybe some people would like to give a unit to a family member as a gift, either for a one time use or for the duration of the deed. I knew someone who got married and the bride’s uncle allowed them to use a Florida timeshare for their honeymoon. While on vacation I meet another couple who asked the grooms parents to purchase them two weeks of timeshare instead of giving them a wedding present so they would be able to enjoy vacations for a lifetime.

If you are a current owner and considering purchasing another week please comment and let us know the reason behind your purchase. I am also interested to see if the fifty percent statistics mentioned above holds true in the United States. We also encourage anyone interested to visit the following page to search our database and buy a timeshare.

Due to the current state of the economy and many banks going into a lending freeze, many companies are now searching for any way possible to get capitol for normal business operations, things are no different in the timeshare industry. The latest company that I have read about trying to get their hands on some cash is one of the major timeshare players, Westgate Resorts. A recent article posted by a local news channel in Orlando, Florida reports Westgate CEO David Seigel is seeking to borrow $2 billion from the state’s pension fund. Seigel calls the proposition a win-win and stated, “Advantage to the state. They would get more than normal return on their loans and they would be guaranteed we would replace any loans that default with good loans so they would always have good collateral”. If you would like to read the full article please click here.

Seigel makes a strong argument concerning this proposition, claiming the loan would instantly create 2,000 jobs through out the state of Florida. Anytime a business wants to borrow taxpayer money the topic becomes very controversial very quickly. We have recently seen this on a much larger scale with the United States government and certain companies in the financial industry. Personally I feel that the government should not get involved in the business practices of any company unless it has something to do with national security or the business is contracted by the government to perform a certain service for them. For this reason I think that Florida would be better off steering clear of the proposed transaction and saving its money. Westgate timeshares offer a number of different resorts through out the United States and have sold units to literally thousands of timeshare owners across the country. I would be interested to hear from Westgate owners, does this article give you a sense of uncertainty or do you view it as regular business operations for this company? Also what is your opinion, should the state lend the money to Westgate or leave the money in the pension fund, which is losing money as a result of the current economy? I am very interested to see how this story turns out, only time will tell if Westgate receives the money they are seeking.

Happy Birthday to the United States of America! This year the USA will celebrate its 233rd birthday and the celebrations and festivities will no doubt be at an all time high. While many timeshare owners will be taking a well deserved timeshare vacation away from home, others will participate in the activities offered in and around their communities, whether it be a good old fashioned barbeque or a full blown firework display. During all of the celebrations it is easy to sometimes forget that safety should come first, for this reason has become a holiday where many injuries are reported each year, and no one is immune from the accidents that might happen. It is always encouraged to have a good time and celebrate with friends and family but safety should also be on the minds while the festivities are in full swing. Below are a few tips that can help people to have a safe and fun holiday weekend.

Fireworks displays are my favorite part of the 4th of July holiday. Many people like to put on their own fireworks displays in their backyard or wherever their town will allow. However this can dramatically increase the chance of injury, especially if there are small children around. I am definitely not discouraging setting off your own fireworks, in fact I enjoy this more than watching the professional fireworks displays in my area, just remember if you do put on your own show make sure all small children are well supervised at all times. Make sure you check with your local law enforcement agency for all rules and regulations regarding fireworks. With the extra motorist on the road the risk of getting in an accident will increase during this holiday. Make sure to obey all traffic laws in your area while on the road to ensure a safe arrival to and from your destination. It is no secret that people love to drink and party on holidays, especially the 4th of July, make sure you designate a driver before leaving for your destination. Another tip that I have is something that may be overlooked by many people, with summer in full swing and temperatures on the rise it is important to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. With all the activities and parties going on many people forget to drinking enough water which can easily lead to heat stroke, this effect is intensified in young children and the elderly.

If you are planning to visit a timeshare resort many of them will be offering special activities for this holiday, be sure to check with the staff at your resort. We would love to hear from you about your plans for the holiday, we always appreciate interesting ideas regarding travel and holiday activities. Vacation Timeshare Rentals wishes everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July.
