Not Using Your Timeshare Week?

Written by:

Many timeshare owners contact me on a daily basis wanting to rent out their unit because they are not going to be able to use it this year, while we are happy to help owners rent timeshares I can’t help but wonder what the main reasons would be for someone not visiting their timeshare. I have been pondering this issue for a few days now and would like to know why owners choose to rent their timeshare as oppose to using them, after all most of the lodging for their trip as already had been paid for via annual maintenance fees. I was able to come up with a few issues that might keep families from using their timeshare.

Obviously the first reason I thought of was the current state of the economy. With the current state of the economy some families may be opting to stay at home instead of visiting their timeshare. The cost of traveling to your timeshare’s location has become very high; perhaps families feeling the crunch of the US economy are electing to cut back on their travel budget. Even with the economy being bad right now once you get to your destination a timeshare can save you a lot of money. Most timeshare units have full sized kitchens in them giving families the option to eat in saving literally hundreds of dollars over the course of a vacation.

Something else that might keep families from using a timeshare may be the available dates will simply not work this time. I see this being an issue when someone owns a fixed week timeshare, maybe the dates fall on a time when children are in school or the family has other obligations to attend too. An option for families facing this issue is to list a timeshare exchange on VTR; our exchange section allows interaction between both owners who are willing to exchange their timeshare with another owner looking to do the same.

If you are an owner who finds themselves not able to use their timeshare I encourage your rent your timeshare using VTR. I would also love to hear from any owners not using their timeshares, are the issues above the main reasons an owner might not be able to use a timeshare? Are there other issues not covered, if so let us know what they might be?
