Vacationing on a Budget - Part 2
Written by: Traver
Earlier in the week we discussed different methods people might use to save money on a family vacation. I mentioned looking for last minute timeshare deals, signing up for online travel newsletters, and looking for lodging that is a little further away from the attractions in the area you are visiting. In this post I will be discussing a few more interesting ways you can save money and stretch your vacation budget.
Families will normally be able to receive free or highly discounted rates at a timeshare resort by participating in a timeshare promotion. Basically the timeshare promotion is a chance for the sales staff to show you around and give you information regarding the resort and how timeshares work. The resort will say that most presentations last 90 minutes; however few of them actually end on time. You will normally receive a free gift in addition for your time; many resorts will offer free dinner or tickets to popular attractions in the area. Basically if you are willing to spend a couple of hours with a timeshare salesperson you can save hundreds of dollars on lodging.
There are a couple of different ways to save money on transportation, both getting to your destination and when you arrive at your destination. Weekends are the time when most people travel, if you can travel during the middle of the week, for example Tuesday or Wednesday, you will be able to find highly discounted flights. Many airlines will also offer email alerts, letting people know exactly when a discounted flight is available to book online. Many people I have talked with have paid around 50 percent of the actual price just by signing up for these alerts.
Many popular vacation destinations will have a highly developed public transportation system. Instead of renting a car, research the area’s public transportation before arriving, you might be very surprised with the information you find. I opted to not rent a car on my last trip; we were able to ride the bus all day long for only $5, a fraction of the cost of renting a car.
In conclusion, there are many fantastic deals out there as long as you are patient and search out the best prices. Please share any other suggestions you have for saving money on vacations.
