South Lake Tahoe Here I come….in 8 days!

Written by: Traver

In my last post I had mentioned that I would be going to Lake Tahoe for a snowboarding trip from December 13 to December 20. As time draws closer, almost exactly one week from now my excitement grows. I continue to check the conditions of the mountains and the conditions of the weather during my stay. I thought I would provide you with some of the information I found about a few of the ski resorts in South Lake Tahoe, in my next post I will give some facts about the snowboarding/skiing in North Lake Tahoe.

According to Heavenly’s website, www.skiheavenly.com, most of the snow on this mountain is man made and they continue to work hard day and night to get more and more trails open. This resort contains 4,800 acres of with 30 lifts and 95 different runs. I do not expect all of this terrain to be open this early in the season but hopefully over the next week they will begin to open a substantial amount of the resort. Many great reviews were found for this resort, it seems everyone tends to mention the views that can be found while riding the lifts.

Kirkwood ski resort is also located in South Lake Tahoe, it is about one half the size of Heavenly with 2,300 acres of usable ski area, 12 lifts and 65 runs. Fifty percent of the runs are classified as intermediate, fifteen are classified as beginner, and thirty-five percent are classified as advanced. From the reviews I have read many people have had a great experience with this mountain, the main theme I find is that it is not as crowded as Heavenly. Some have stated this mountain has the best snow in the South Lake Tahoe area. This smaller mountain tends to be more challenging, with steeper slopes.

Sierra at Tahoe is the smallest mountain I will write about, it has 2,000 acres for patrons to ski/snowboard, 12 lifts, and 46 runs. This mountain sounds less challenging than the others, with seventy-five percent of the mountain classified as intermediate to beginner skiing.

I found a great website dedicated to providing users with unbiased reviews of ski resorts throughout the world. Users of this site are allowed to place their reviews of any resort they have visited, so I encourage you to visit www.skigo.com, no matter where you plan on skiing or snowboarding.

There are other resorts in South Lake Tahoe but these seemed to be the three that appear to be the most popular. I am not sure I will have time to visit all three of these but I will be sure to comment on the resorts I do visit. In my next entry I will provide information about the ski resorts located in the North Lake Tahoe area. I would love to have some user comments on these mountains and any suggestions that readers may have.
